Clay roof tile colours

Tudor makes its clay roof tile colours the traditional way: most get their colour from Kent sand pressed into the face before firing, a coarser grain for the Antique colours and a finer one for the Sussex colours. Natural Clay has no sand at all. There are 13 colours in all.

How to choose a colour

  • Look at the roofs around you, especially in a conservation area. Your conservation officer may have a view.
  • Order samples and look at them outside, in daylight, next to your brick or stone. Screens change colours.
  • Think about mixing: colours are packed separately, so your roofer can blend two or three on site. Jubilee in the mix gives an instantly aged look.
  • Ask us for an address near you where a colour is on a roof, or visit the factory in Lydd by appointment.

Clay is a natural material and every firing varies slightly, which is part of the appeal. The Roof Tile Association explains this in its guide to achieving the best visual effect.

Questions about clay roof tile colours

Can I mix clay roof tile colours?

Yes. Every colour is packed separately and your roofer blends them on site. Mixing in Jubilee gives an instantly aged look.

Which colours suit conservation areas?

The English Oak range was developed for conservation areas and heritage properties, and the Traditional colours suit most period settings.

Will the colour be the same as the photos?

Screens show colours differently, so always look at real samples in daylight before you choose.

Are handmade tiles all exactly the same colour?

No. Tones vary slightly by design, and tiles are sorted for quality and colour after firing.

Choose colours in daylight, not on a screen
