Bespoke roof tiles
Tudor makes bespoke roof tiles and fittings to any size or shape, usually within 4–6 weeks of order. Old buildings get like-for-like sizes that respect regional differences; new buildings get shapes no one else has, such as arrowhead tiles 400 mm long.

Bespoke roof tiles for old buildings
The Royal Charter of 1477 decreed that English clay tiles should be 10½ × 6¼ in, but the rule was rarely followed, and peg tiles kept varying until they settled at 10 × 6 in in the late 19th century. So the tiles on historic buildings differ widely, and even a slight change in size can spoil an old roof.
For older buildings we make peg and plain tiles to any like-for-like size. Their gentle double camber, subtle tones and textures recreate the look of time-weathered peg tiles, with square or round peg holes for wooden or metal pegs, or standard nibs for modern fixing. Recent bespoke peg tiles have ranged from 8 × 4½ in to 12 × 7 in.

Bespoke tiles for new buildings
For the music school at King’s College School, Wimbledon, Hopkins Architects designed a roof of six bespoke tile shapes, each in two colours. The elongated arrowheads, 400 mm long and 100 mm wide, needed exceptional handmaking and firing skills. We made more than 90,000 tiles and specials, mixed 30% red to 70% brown, all backed by our 30-year guarantee.
We have also made tiles with distressed edges for a customer in the USA, formed by hand in the final stage of the clay work, and custom tiles for cones, turrets, hips and ridges.
From drawing to roof: a bespoke hip

The architect’s drawing
Bespoke work starts from a drawing or a sample tile.

Prototypes drying
Clay hips are made by hand, and prototypes are checked on site before firing.

After firing
Fired hips are sorted for quality and colour.

This hip took several prototypes and site visits to get exactly right.
