Oast house roof tiles

Round oast house roofs need tapered tiles, because each course gets shorter as the cone narrows. Tudor makes two handmade oast house roof tiles, the wide and narrow oast tapers: both are 250 mm long and taper from 150 mm wide to 120 mm or 85 mm.

Tiles for oast houses, turrets and cones

Oast houses were built to dry hops, and their round roofs are part of the Kent and Sussex landscape. The same tapered tiles suit turrets and other conical roofs.

We also make the custom shapes and sizes needed for circular cones, and tapered tiles for the roundels of oast and turreted roofs.

Working out the mix of tapers

How many wide and narrow tapers a roof needs depends on the size and shape of the cone. Send us drawings or photos and we will work it out with you. We also make bespoke tapers for roofs that don’t suit the standard sizes.

Questions about oast house tiles

Why do oast roofs need tapered tiles?

Because the roof is a cone: each course is shorter than the one below it, so the tiles must narrow towards the top.

Which oast taper do I need?

It depends on the diameter and height of the cone. Send us drawings or photos and we will work out the mix of wide and narrow tapers.

Do you make tiles for turrets?

Yes. The same tapers suit turrets and other conical roofs, and we make bespoke shapes where needed.
