Kent peg tiles
Tudor’s Kent peg tiles are handmade clay tiles measuring 250 × 150 mm (10 × 6 in), the size Kent peg tiles settled on in the late 19th century. They are flatter than our plain tiles, with a slight camber to match the peg tiles on many listed and conservation-area roofs.

Why they’re called peg tiles
Peg tiles hang from the roof battens on pegs pushed through two holes near the top: softwood pegs at first, later metal ones. Plain tiles grew out of them, with clay nibs (small lugs) formed on the back instead of pegs.
A Royal Charter of 1477 set English tile sizes at 10½ × 6¼ in, but Kent peg tiles mostly stayed at 10 × 6 in. Lydd, where our factory stands, is the home of the Kent peg tile.

Kent peg tiles made to match your roof
Peg tile sizes varied from town to town until the late 19th century, and even a small difference shows on an old roof. We make like-for-like sizes for restorations, with square or round peg holes for wooden or metal pegs, or with nibs on the back for modern fixing.
Bespoke peg tiles are usually ready within 4–6 weeks of order. About bespoke sizes.

Questions about Kent peg tiles
What size is a Kent peg tile?
The standard Kent size is 10 × 6 inches (250 × 150 mm). Older roofs vary, so we also make peg tiles to like-for-like sizes.
What is the difference between peg tiles and plain tiles?
Peg tiles hang on pegs through holes and are flatter, which suits restorations of pegged roofs. Plain tiles have nibs on the back and a deeper camber. Both are handmade in the same clays and colours.
How many peg tiles per square metre?
About 66 at the standard 95 mm gauge, or 58 per square yard.
Can peg tiles have nibs?
Yes. We can add standard nibs to the back for modern fixing, as well as square or round peg holes.
How long do bespoke peg tiles take?
Usually 4–6 weeks from order.
