# Clay hip tiles and valley tiles

Tudor handmakes four clay hip tiles (bonnet, Kent, Sussex and eyebrow) and a universal valley tile. Hip tiles cover the outside corner where two roof slopes meet; valley tiles line the inside corner, so the roof stays tiled all the way round with no lead on show.

## Four clay hip tile shapes

Hip tiles on the Tudor fittings chart. 8: Sussex hip. 9: Bonnet hip. 10: Kent hip. 29: Eyebrow hip.

On a [hipped roof](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hip_roof), a _bonnet hip_ is curved like the brim of a bonnet and laid up the hip so the courses flow round the corner. The other shapes give a different line along the hip: ask for samples, or for an address where you can see them on a roof.

Order by name and chart number, or [send us drawings](https://www.tudorrooftiles.co.uk/contact/) and we will work out what you need.

## Universal valley tiles

Our universal valley tile forms a tiled valley, so the roof covering runs unbroken through the inside corner with no lead or metal on show. Like all our fittings, it is made in the same clay and colours as the tiles.

## Hips designed with architects

For King’s College School in Wimbledon, we made bespoke hip tiles from the architect’s hand-drawn 3D diagram, and presented dry clay prototypes on the roof so the size and shape could be adjusted before firing. [See how a bespoke hip is made](https://www.tudorrooftiles.co.uk/bespoke-roof-tiles/).

## Questions about hip and valley tiles

**What is a bonnet hip tile?**

A curved hip tile shaped like the brim of a bonnet. Laid up the hip, it carries the courses round the corner of the roof.

**What is the difference between a hip and a valley?**

A hip is the outside corner where two roof slopes meet; a valley is the inside corner. Hip tiles cover one and valley tiles line the other.

**Can you make a hip tile to an architect’s drawing?**

Yes. We have made bespoke hips from drawings, with prototypes and site visits to get the shape right.

**Do I need lead in a valley?**

Not with valley tiles, which form the valley in clay. Your roofer will advise on the right detail for your roof.
