# Bat access tiles

Tudor’s bat access tiles let bats back into a roof without leaving a gap you would notice. The top tunnel tile forms an 18 mm high, roughly 165 mm long tunnel to an entrance hole in the tiles beneath, so bats can crawl into the roost.

## How bat access tiles work

The set was designed in consultation with leading bat experts, and takes advantage of the double camber of Tudor tiles, which lets air flow under the tiles. With the airflow between the tiles and the underlay, it aims to protect bats from extremes of heat.

It gives bats an entrance to the underlay, or into the loft once the underlay is opened. It works in plain tile roofs of any brand, and we also make ridge tiles with an 18 mm access cut into the side.

## Bats, roofs and the law

All UK bats and their roosts are protected by law, under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 and the Conservation of Habitats and Species Regulations 2017. If a roof has, or may have had, bats at any time, you need expert advice before work starts, and the new roof must let them return.

Breaking the law can mean an unlimited fine and up to six months in prison. A bat access set can form part of the mitigation required for an existing roost, or give access where there wasn’t a roost before. For advice, contact the [Bat Conservation Trust](https://www.bats.org.uk).

### Which bats use roof tiles

The two species most often found in UK roofs are pipistrelles, which like tight spaces under tiles and tile hanging, and brown long-eared bats, which prefer roof timbers and ridges inside lofts.

**Will bat access tiles work with my existing roof?**

Yes. The set works in plain tile roofs of any brand.

**What colours do bat access tiles come in?**

Every standard Tudor colour, or Natural Clay without a sand face.

**Can bats get into the ridge?**

Yes. We make ridge tiles with an 18 mm access in the side, for bats that roost in the ridge space.
